The Ancient Theatre of Neapolis , also known as the Roman Theatre of Anticaglia, can be visited again thanks to the project “The Theatre between the Walls”, which from July 2024 to January 2025, according to the detailed calendar below, will include extraordinary openings and free guided tours of the site, further enriching the city’s cultural offering.
The excavation and enhancement project of the Theater began in 2003, with funds from the Great Project Historic Center of Naples UNESCO Site Enhancement – Development and Cohesion Fund Campania Region, commissioned by the Municipality of Naples, the Department of Urban Planning, Urban Transformation Area and Housing Policies, and jointly curated by the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Naples and the Municipality of Naples, and has brought to light a large portion of the substructures and the cavea, making it possible to estimate the size and capacity of the entire structure comparable to that of the medium-large theaters of Campania, capable of accommodating up to 5 thousand spectators.
Over time, the Theatre has undergone a series of restoration works, of which the brick arches along Via Anticaglia are still visible; progressively abandoned and covered, the site ended up integrating into the urban fabric of the city, until the start of the recovery and redevelopment works.
It will be possible to book your entrance through the Eventbrite platform, and participate in the experience of an “archaeological” visit to the construction site still in progress, in which a path has been identified that will allow you to admire the structures discovered and discover the history of the complex, whose currently visible part dates back to the end of the 1st century AD. The visits will be conducted by professional archaeologists from the Apoikia company, in collaboration with the Samoa company. This link: https://culturacomunedinapoli.eventbrite.com/
